Mr Holland’s words follow Gold Fields deal to purchase three mines in the Yilgarn South region of Western Australia from Barrick for $300 million. The three mines in question -Granny Smith, Darlot and Lawlers – produced 450,000 ounces of gold in 2012 and reported 2.6-million ounces of gold reserves plus 1.9-million ounces of gold resources at the end of December.
Mr Holland was quoted as saying that Gold Fields, “are always on the lookout for opportunities and we are not ruling anything out. I believe that we can take the successful business model we used with our first acquisitions in Australia and replicate it with the mines we have now bought from Barrick."
Market speculation is that one of the Australian mines Gold Fields may be interested in is AngloGold Ashanti’s Sunrise Dam operation, situated on the same geological formation as the Granny Smith mine Gold Fields has just bought.
